'The gun straps to the inside of my leg with Velcro. It's not the absolute zenith of fashion to do this anymore, but girls who wear theirs with leather straps and buckles aren't serious: with Velcro you can get at the thing when you need it. I also have a pink ammo belt. It's heavy, but who said fashion was easy?'

In a mall like any other, a gang of teenage girls are suddenly caught up in a maelstrom of shopping and violence. But - as the designer bullets fly - it is not only their own lives they are fighting for. Unknown to them they are battling for the life of a man trapped in another place, in a different world, and with very different enemies. He is a man they have never met, but who represents the future of the human race ...or could destroy it.

'Sullivan is a very major contemporary novelist...intelligence and power shine on every page of Maul: a book highly to be recommended.'

Adam Roberts, Infinity Plus
Shortlisted for the Arthur C. Clarke, BSFA and Tiptree Awards
'Arthur C. Clarke Award-winner Sullivan neatly threads two seemingly unrelated coming-of-age stories together--one of 'girlz' rumbling in a Jersey mall, the other of a future in which males are nearly extinct--in this fantasy that evenhandedly explores gender issues...With an eye on scientific ethics and teenage codes, Sullivan invests her high-risk narratives with relevant discourses on the power of sex, just and unjust authority, when to rebel and when to cooperate.'

Publishers Weekly
All the elements of this novel work very hard all the time, carrying not only a complex plot and fascinating ideas about microbiology, but a heavy satirical charge aimed at SF itself.  That it manages so well and is so entertaining is testament to Sullivan's skill and intelligence.  I haven't enjoyed a book so much in a long time.

Justina Robson, The Guardian
'This is one of the standout novels of the year, with perhaps the strongest, most eloquent, depiction of the microbiological world you will find.  This book is much more than it first appears.'

Paul N. Billinger, Vector
'There are feminist books that are the product of rage, and feminist books that are the product of thought.  Maul is most definitely a book that makes you think.'

Cheryl Morgan, Emerald City
Sullivan's writing rocks, with a frenetic prose style that helps sweep aside any objections to credibility and leaves you gasping at her sheer audacity in putting such things on paper....This book is sexy and cerebral and action-packed; in short, a whole lot of fun.

The Third Alternative
'Sullivan is one of the best and most ambitious SF novelists around.'

Dreamwatch
'This is an important work of feminist SF.'
Time Out
'A fiercely intelligent look at gender politics and consumer psychology.'
SFX
'The mayhem is vastly entertaining.'
Nick Gevers, Locus
